Why Do So Many Websites Fail To Ever Meet The Owners Expecations?
Because the old business plans no longer work. The internet does not care about a good business plan, a solid strategy, or your market research.
Most people create websites for a reason. There can be a lot of different reasons but most websites are created for a reason.
The local grocery store wants to create an e-commerce website that will allow their customers to purchase products online.
The local attorney wants an information website that would allow potential clients who’ve gotten DUIs to contact him.
Your neighbor wants a website to compete with Facebook. Your roofer is having a website built right this second.
There are a lot of reasons to create a website but to be successful you have to know how to get your target audience to react! This means you have to design for the subconsciously.
In order to do this you first have to know your goals for the website and what actions you want the website visitors to take while they are on the website?
And, of course you need to know how to get them to take that action rather it be to call, fill out a form, register, donate or just click a link.
You have to know how to persuade your website visitors to react to your website in the way you want.
The other day I was walking around the pool with my movie camera, filming the kids. The next thing I knew I stepped a little too far to the right and both I and the camera were in the pool. Needless to say I needed a new camera.
So I went online and started looking around. The first thing I noticed was that there were all kinds of new features. I looked through about 5 websites and was about to make a purchase when I realized that the camera I was buying wasn’t as nice as the one I saw, on another website. I actually had to make myself purchase the camera off the other site. The calls to action, the colors and everything else was so inviting and looked so easy to make the purchase that I was actually have to fight myself not to buy the camera.
This got me to thinking and I realized this isn’t the first time I’ve done this.
There are sites I purchase from daily when I know there are similar sites that offer a better product at a lower price. But subconsciously I convince myself that the extra expense is worth it, because it’s quicker and easier to make the purchase from website A.
The sad truth is, as I sit here and think about it, website B is actually less complicated then website A. But the colors and flow of website A makes it appear easier to use.
The only thing that website A has better then website B is their website. Website A has been getting my money for years, not because they have a better product, better customer service or a better price but because they have a better designed website. Their products are laid out better and the colors are more lively, vibrant, and trusting. Website B went with darker less trusting colors and you have to click on the product to actually see what the product looks like. But the thing that surprises me is that until now I did not realize that website B had a one page checkout while website A actually has 3.
The majority of the purchasing decisions you make are based on emotion and followed later by logic.
You actually have three brains. You have the brain you control. You are using that part of your brain as you read this. Then there’s the brain that controls how you feel as you read this. And then the brain that controls your breathing and keeps you alert as you read this.
All but one of these is happening subconsciously, you can’t control it, it’s just happening without you even being aware of it.
Let me give you an example;
Let’s say you are driving down the road. As you do this there are three things taking place;
You are thinking about a fight you had with your daughter.
Your angry because there are a lot of things you should’ve said but didn’t.
And you are driving the car, stopping and going without even being aware of it.
You are subconsciously driving the car down the road.
Now someone pulls in front of you. Immediately, (without even thinking) you slam on the brakes and turn the steering wheel.
As you regain control of the car, here’s what’s going on now.
You are no longer angry, you want to go home and hug your daughter.
You are still driving the car
You are crying for letting yourself get so upset at your daughter.
We do not have as much control over the decisions we make as we would like to think we do!
