THINK ABOUT ALL ASPECTS OF YOUR WEBSITE
When designing your website you have to not only think about the products and services you are selling but also each small part of the site. As I surf through the internet and look at different websites I am amazed at how stupid people can be.
Although this is not a problem for me because I have broad band ,but many people still do not, nothing is more annoying than a slow page so keep your photos small. The best rule of thumb is about 10 to 12 kb.
Remember you are presenting a message to the viewer and you want to make it as easy as possible for that person to read and understand your message. Limit the number of fonts you use. Unless there is a specific reason to change fonts DON’T. I recently saw a site and counted 6 types of fonts. I found it very difficult to read .
Also flashing and blinking text or graphics are no nos. There have been many studies done that show that flashing or blinking text or photos make it difficult for viewers to concentrate on the text.
Make sure there is a reason for all graphics. Don’t include a photo of your cute old grandmother unless there is a reason and it relates to the text. There is no reason to have a photo of two people walking on the beach on a website for pet supplies.
Make sure that the information that the viewer needs is presented in a clear concise manner. You want the reader to be able to read and absorb the content easily with as little distraction as possible. It is ok to sell ads for your site but be careful, don’t overload the site with ads. This will make it difficult for the reader to concentrate on your text. Just like with your graphics avoid flashing and blinking ads.
Your website is not for you it is for the reader. Don’t write the content for you. Write for the reader and give that person the facts about why your product or service is better than others. You are selling goods and services and this requires careful word selection. Each word is important because you have both a limited amount of time with reader and a limited amount of space for the text.
The first two or three sentences have to reach out and grab the reader’s attention. If your text does not do this the reader will move on to another site. Also make sure that your site is designed so that the viewer scrolls down to continue reading and not across. Scrolling across may look different and appealing but it is much more difficult to read this way.
If you loose 1 viewer in 10 you have just lost 10% of potential buyers of your goods or services because of poor design or lack of attention when writing your text. Treat each word as if your total message depended on that word.
Every facet of your site is important, from graphics and text to the layout. Look at each detail when designing your site. Even the smallest part is important.
