Most people believe their website needs to be perfect before it goes live, but my question is, perfect from whose perspective?

I had a lady the other day that was driving my employees crazy!

Every time they would get the website like she wanted, she would come back with another thousand changes, most conflicting with what they had already given us.  I was forced to get involved. And I say forced, because if I am not interested in the website, customer or topic, it’s really difficult for me to care one way or the other how the site turns out. All that matters is that the customer is happy, and we get paid. I am sorry but that’s just me, but I’ve got to pay the bills.

You see, I believe it is the fine tuning and tweaking that goes into the offer, business model, and website that will make or break a business.

I am talking about the tweaking and fine tuning that can only be done after the site has gone live. When a business launches there should be a group of people driving traffic to the site, analyzing how that traffic reacted to the site, and then tweaking, and fine tuning that website before running another group of test.

The problem is that a lot of companies do not want to be associated with an inferior product or one that is lacking in capabilities and the ones that don’t care about their credibility normally don’t have the money for the testing, tweaking and fine tuning that has to been done daily forever.

I’ve been making my living online for the past 10 years and I can tell you, that without the desire and dedication to push a project through, it would be difficult to start a business from nothing with nothing and it become a success.

The desire that motivated me to start, build and continue running Geeks on Steroids has always been money. The problem is that as the need for money declines you begin looking in what areas your time would be best spent, and normally fighting a new start up isn’t the best use of time.

It’s the reason I started this project and dropped the ball.

At this moment and time I do not have the need, time or desire to start a new project. The amount of time it takes to start making money with a new business could be better spent working with one of my older already established businesses.

However as I write this I am reminded of one business I would be interested in, just for fun.

Here lately (lately being for about the last year or so) I’ve been getting bombarded by these so-called local SEO gurus.

Their idea is, you can find people to market your business to off-line, in your local area and tell them how great the online world is. From there you sell them an SEO package worth thousands of dollars.

My problem with this is that if you knew what you were doing you would be marketing your business online and not offline.

You see, small business owners are not stupid.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got no doubt that with all the professionally written scripts and emails going around these guys can get some small business owners interested, and even sell a couple. But the majority of small business owners will go online and do some research first.

While these guys are killing themselves running around educating potential victims, I’d like to go online and wait to educate that person before they get ripped off. As the lazy local SEO rolls out of the bed, I am sitting online researching, studying, watching and learning about them. While they are meeting potential victims at local breakfast, lunch, and dinner places, I am buying domain names and building websites. By the time they’ve cold called 200 people to get the first person to agree to meet them, I’ve already gotten their spam email, written and article about them and ranked for their name.

They get the local business all excited about the online adventure and when that business owner gets his credit card in his hand and goes online too make that purchase he’s blocked by my site.

My only problem is I have no desire to do SEO, Outsource SEO or Consult with people.   

But done correctly I think I could get a ton of traffic to the site. I guess you could build a website that reviews SEO’s and enforces the good ones and downgrades the bad ones. You could have a back office that allowed the good SEO’s to write articles and leave comments on articles but have it invitation only.

Other words, you would need three people to vouch for you before you could become a member of the site. Once you became a member you would have access to all kinds of free tools, as well as the ability to write blog post that would show on the site under your name or carry on private chats that are not shown to the outside world. You would also have access to a staff of professional SEO’s as well as SEO and conversion tools.

And while all these tools will make the site a home away from home for most SEO’s the fact that the website is getting thousands of visitors per day who are looking for SEO’s will make it a must have for anyone looking to start an SEO business.

Setting Up a Website for SEO

Okay I am going to take my SEO website and do the SEO on it as well as the marketing and get it to make some serious money. This is one of the four blogs I set up to run alongside SMM.com.co.

Step one is going to be keyword research and keep in mind that what I am about to show you is the exact steps you need to do with each new client we sell SEO to.

The process:

1. Open a text document.

3. Once the list is done per industry and state take it over to Google’s Keyword Tool

4. Paste the list into the keyword tool and click search.

5. You will get a list of keywords, and some data about those keywords.

6. Grab a few keywords (3-5) that have enough searches to drive traffic to your website.

7. Create a folder your newly generated list of keywords.

The Keyword research is done!

You are not going to find large numbers of searches in the local keywords.

However, if we can get ranked for a keyword that is searched 100 times per month, in the number one position, we should get at least 40 visitors per month from that one keyword.

Now I am going to get to converting those visitors a little later but first let’s get the site set up to get them.

Don’t pay too much attention to the monthly searches; we are going to be ranking for a large number of keywords to make up for the small volume of searches.  

Look for a few keywords that get searches, and move on.

Meta Tags

Now that we have a few keywords, we can start with the on-page optimization.

The first thing we need to do is set up the meta tags.

Depending on how the website is built (straight HTML site, Word Press, etc…), you will have to go about setting up the meta tags differently.

However, I am using WordPress so by using the All In One SEO plugin I am finished.

If the website is built straight up with html, you will have to edit each individual page meta tags with a text editor.

Now It’s Time To Get Started On The Content!

Most companies have a website of some kind, but only about 5% use search engine optimization for driving traffic to those websites. And most of the guys doing search engine optimization do so because they spent thousands of dollars on a top-of-the-line website design only to find out that no one is coming to visit them.

SEO has become a requirement for just about every business trying to make a living on or off-line. Especially now that every other previously effective marketing tool has become ineffective or out of reach. Before the Internet there were a number of ways to successfully advertise a business.

Now however,

Code enforcement is cracking down on signs. Radio and TV advertising is getting too expensive and becoming less effective because of the number of stations. Newspapers have become useless as people turn to the web for their information. Tradeshows are few in number and most are no longer well marketed. Almost no one uses the telephone book anymore because of the web. Bus benches and billboards cost a future and again, how many people look at them?

The Internet is now what the telephone book used to be. So as a business you not only have to adapt but you have to do better than your competition, so your name comes up at the top of the list in any keyword search. You can no longer just buy a full-page ad in the telephone book to stand out. Your website has to stand out in among 2 billion other sites and outshine all the others in your industry to be successful.

To make it more fun the Internet is constantly changing and what works to get you in the top of the search results today, may not work tomorrow. In most cases, when one website ranks over another, it’s not because of the things you see but because of the things you don’t see. Often what is most relevant is the code that makes up the pages, the keywords used on the pages, and the relevancy of links into and out of the page.

And one of the hardest things to get around is the age of your domain.

I’ve decided to get back into the swing of things and start using Geeks on Steroids again.

I’ve been so caught up in affiliate marketing the last couple years that I’ve pretty much neglected my main business.

Believe it or not Geeks on Steroids originally started out as a search engine optimization company but got pushed into doing more web design work, then search engine optimization work. As time went on we started marketing our own sites in the social media areas as well as with the search engines and stopped doing marketing for clients.

I turned the web design business over to employees and have spent the last 3 years in affiliate marketing. About the only thing I’ve done for Geeks on Steroids in the past 3 years was in marketing them on the social networking sites as well as the search engines for web design terms. But now that is all about to change.

I am coming back into the day to day business with Geeks on Steroids and we will be doing less web design work and more search engine marketing work.

Everything I’m about to show you is based on the methods I use daily to make money. These methods can be applied to any online market.

Internet marketing is about targeting hungry buyers in places where the traffic is easy to find and will yield a return on our time and investment. Nothing I am about to show you is complex however, 90% of people marketing online fail to understand these concepts and therefore struggle to make money online.

The methods I am about to show you will work and I am not going to hold anything back however, you will need to take action to make it work.

Everything I am going to show you is based on real world experience. It’s been proven to make money for me over the years.

I am going to use an affiliate marketing site because it allows me to focus on the most important part of a successful online business, which is conversion and marketing.

I will use the website http://www.siliconewristband.org as an example site.

By targeting affiliate marketing, I do not have to worry about;

1. Having a product of the of my own
2. Customer support
3. Merchant accounts
4. Accepting payments online

Our goal is to convert as many visitors into buyers.

We will be doing this by focusing our attention on a very small percent of Google searches.

We need to understand how search engines work but even more importantly we need understand how the searchers search.

I would guess that about 80% of the searches that take place on the major search engines are for research. These are people who have no intention of purchasing anything online, they are looking for information. Therefore they will not be of any use to us and we will not target them in our search engine marketing.

I would also guess that about 30% are looking for information for a future purchase. These people who may or may not make a purchase in the future, we will not target them ether.

The smallest groups of searchers are the ones looking to purchase something right now. They understand what they are looking for, have the money and are ready to make a purchase.

These people will search by product names, model numbers, and will use terms like free shipping, discount, and bonus and so on and so on.

These are the people we want to target.
