"Social Media Marketing"

I’ve often wondered why so many people misunderstand the whole social media thing. It is really quite simple.

Let’s say that Tom owns a V.W shop and over the years it has become the local hangout for anyone that owns or has ever owned a V.W.

Charlie owns a company that does house painting but the second he gets off work he heads to the V.W shop to drink a cold beer and talk to the guys. Don is a wealthy guy that collects V.W’s and enjoys hanging out at the shop as well.

Charlie comes in early one day because he has no jobs to do. Tom tells him the shop needs a coat of paint and he’ll pay him to paint it. As Charlie is hard at work painting Don pulls in and noticing Charlie painting ask him if he can put a coat on his house when he gets some time. The local hang out continues to feed Charlie the odd job here and there that keeps him going through the tough times.

While Tom is the local mechanic and owns the shop he does not do any type of car painting. However Gregg hangs out at the shop and enjoys fixing up and painting his own V.W. When the guys see the good looking paint job on Gregg’s V.W they start begging him to paint theirs. Before long Gregg has rented part of the shop from Tom and his painting cars full time. And let’s not forget Barnard that owns a tire and wheel shop down the road that enjoys hanging out at the shop and who sales a set of wheels from time to time to other people that are hanging out at the shop.

Oh wait…here comes Ralph in a beat up broken up Ford pickup with a load speak mounted on the roof interrupting everyone so he can yell and scream and tell them how good of a painter he is and how they should all come to his shop and hang out. Ralf is only one amongst 50 that come by at least once a week pulling the same crap. They never understand why no one comes to their shop and make comments to their buddies that even though Tom has 40,000 people hanging out at his shop none of them are spending money there because he has been up there to check it out.

Ralph has no clue that Gregg is booked up for the next three months and if he were to go sit down drink a beer and help out a little with some free advice he could get more work than he ever dreamed of.

Tom is old and the only reason he keeps the shop open is because he enjoys having a place to hang out and drink beer. There are a lot of guys fixing other people’s cars, making money and using Tom’s tools. But at the end of the day Tom makes more money from these guys tipping him then he would make if he was fixing the cars himself.

Charlie pays people to work on his V.W when he has money and the people help Charlie out by giving him work when he is low on money. But Charlie is only there to have a good time and drink some beer.

Gregg loves fixing up and painting cars. He never had a desire to do it for a living but was pushed into it by the other guys.

Ralph, well Ralph is just another spammer trying to figure out why everyone else is making money and he’s not.

And let’s not forget about John. He knows nothing about V.W’s, has never been to Tom’s shop but is selling a book about how to become a million using Tom’s for marketing. Keep in mind that he has never used nor made money at Tom’s but is making a lot of money selling a book he knows nothing about. Social Media in a nut shell.

I hope that all makes sense.
