When you are sick and go to the doctor what you need is first to feel better and secondly to understand what is wrong with you. Nothing is more disconcerting than to have a doctor say something like “well Mr. Jones you have severe mucus backup in your nasal cavity caused by an unknown mutated virus. You need to consume salicylic acid and recline in your bed.” What he should have said is “you have a stuffy nose caused by a cold. Take two aspirin and get some bed rest.”
The same is true when shopping for a website design.
Many techno-geeks try to razzle and dazzle you by throwing out as many technical terms as possible. Just like with the doctor what you don’t need is a bunch of technical terms like htlm5, css3 and java script. What you need is clear concise information about what can be offered at what price.
In order to get this information it is going to take some work on your part. Before you contact the first web designer you must have a clear vision of what you need to accomplish your goals.
Make a list of what features you think you will need. For example if you are selling home decorating items then you may need to display your products. If you have a multi-national market the write down exactly what countries you are targeting. Don’t wait until you are talking to the web designer to think about things like this.
It will also help if you can browse the internet and find sites you like and don’t like and use these to explain your needs to the designer.
Also and this is very important, check prices and decide what your budget is. Don’t expect to get a site with lots of bells and whistles for a bargain basement price and if a designer gives you a significantly lower price than others are careful something is rotten in Denmark.
But just like with a doctor you need to feel comfortable with a web designer. If he starts spouting terms you don’t understand move on. Remember designing a website is a process and goes beyond just buying a domain name and hosting a website. If you do not have a good relationship with the designer then it will be a miserable process that will not achieve your goals.
This comfort factor also allows you to be absolutely honest with the web design specialist about your budget and your expectations. As I mentioned before developing a website is a process. Talk to the designer about other services his company can provide like SEO (Search Engine Optimization). This service can get your website better page ranking on Google Yahoo and MSN. You can have the best website in the world and if it is on page 10 of Google no one will ever know.
Selecting a website designer is like buying a car. Ask for examples of their work and, test drives so to speak, a few of their sites. Ask a lot of questions. If their response to your questions is in techno dribble say thanks but no thanks and find someone else. Just like with a car you don’t need to know the name and function of every part under the hood only the price and that it can get you from point A to point B safely and efficiently. The same for a website. You don’t need to know the technical terms involved in website design only the price and that it will get you where your company needs to be.

It’s 2:00 am and I just can’t seem to get any sleep, I’ve been lying in the bed, staring at the dark for the last 4 or 5 hours.
It seems on the nights I can’t make myself get any sleep I do some of my best and craziest thinking.
Here, let me explain.
I’ve got a web design business that was voted one of the top ten web design businesses in the world.
But over the years I’ve learned to really hate the web design business. I’m always trying to find talented designers and programmers as well as having to deal with clients that can sometimes make you feel like pulling your hair out. I’ve reached the point that most emails from new potential clients are ignored and when the web design phone rings I hate having to answer it. And I am normally the type of person that loves dealing with and helping people. But with the web designer business there always seems to be some type of problem I have to deal with.
But maybe the problem is my dislike for the business; maybe my dislike for the business has caused the business to dislike me. I believe everything in the world has some type of energy that it receives from the people around it. By me giving my business negative energy over the years it’s learned to return the favor by giving me negative energy.
To fix the problem with the web design business I first need to learn to love the business again. And it’s something I am going to start working on first thing tomorrow.

I just got off the phone with an SEO company that was trying to sell me on buying links. The company claims that they own over 100,000 websites, however I really doubt that.
But for the sake of argument let’s say they do, I asked them what they used the sites for and they said for selling links. A million and one ways to make money online and all these guys can come up with is selling links?
So…let’s say for the sake of argument that I owned over 100,000 websites and I wanted to make money with them. Even if the ultimate plan was link selling why wouldn’t I develop the sites into real websites and have them make me money in addition to the link selling?
Think about it!!
I live in a third world country were making $300.00 per month is considered good money. I could hire someone to go around and teach people how to make money online as an affiliate. Then have me a system built that would allow me to sign people up under me and decide on the percent of money I wanted them to make.
Other words, a leather wallet company says they will pay me 20% of all the sales I make. I then build a website, set up the affiliate stuff and allow someone to run the site for 10% of the sales. When they log into the backoffice all they see is the amount of money they’ve made. They have no idea how much I’ve made, if any.
Since I own the sites I am able to control the sites and move them around my network. If someone is not producing we kick them out and hand the site to someone who is more interested in making money. When you consider the fact that I am handling the site designs, hosting, domain names, affiliate stuff, training, collecting money and paying out my affiliates it becomes a great opportunity for all parties involved.
As a matter of fact done correctly I’d venture to say once it’s all said and done you wouldn’t want to sell links. You’d be making too much money in the affiliate marketing arena.

Making a Living Online
I’ve been making my living online for the last 9 years and I believe it’s about time to expand that business. My main business for the last 9 years has been the web design business and I’d like to add two things to that business now.
- Online Marketing
- Consulting
It really only makes sense that both the online marketing and consulting business should follow the web design business. After all, marketing without a website design that is able to convert traffic into sales is a waste of time and a kickass web design that doesn’t get any traffic is a waste of time.
When it comes to making money online there are combinations of things that need to work together. As we start getting ready for next year at Geeks on Steroids we want to offer all the services needed to make money online.
