Host Gator

I’ll be moving all my sites to a new server this weekend.

I’ve paid Host Gator over $200.00 a month for the last couple years and will now be taking that business and more to someone else.

I was willing to pay Host Gator $374.00 per month to upgrade my server to the largest server they had however I was unwilling to pay a full month for the current server when I was only into the second day of the billing cycle.

Host Gator refused to wave the two days and allow me to move my sites to the new server. I was then willing to pay to add more memory to the current server until I found out that Host Gator was charging hundreds more than the competition for the memory.

I’ve had problems with my server sense we started with Host Gator and have talked with Brent several times and he was always willing to help. However my last email went unanswered.

The sad part is that my server had to be rebooted daily and the staff at Host Gator never tried to look into or explain the problem. It was much easier to just reboot the server.

Below is that email to Brent at Host Gator.

Hi Brent,

I´ve had servers with you guys for a number of years and have had numerous problems along the way. However, I have paid my bills and done my best to hang in here. For the last month I´ve started having to get the server rebooted daily and have only been told in the last couple days that it´s because the server is running out of RAM. I see that you guys sell servers for the same price I´m paying that have 4 GB of memory, yet I´m being told that I have to pay $300 per gig to upgrade my server or pay a higher monthly payment than someone with a newer server with more memory.

I hope that you can help me with this problem and to end this I will give you an example of what just transpired with my brother and his server company. As a test I had him contact Server Beach to see how much they charged. He was told that it was $25/month extra and they could take care of it. This was better than what I´ve been told except that my brother told them the server was 3 years old and he didn´t feel it was fair to be paying extra money when he´s already on an old box.

The difference?

They are upgrading his server tonight for free and I´ve spent 3 days on the phone with your people arguing about this issue and ending up paying the $300 for 1 extra gb of which I am now about to cancel.

Unless I hear back from you I am starting the process to move all of my business to Server beach since they seem more interested in their customer’s success than your company at the moment.

If you want to have a presence online then you need web hosting. A hosting company is like the power company, you really don’t pay much attention to them until they are no longer there. Here in Colombia the power goes off three or four times a day and if you don’t protect your property with some kind of backup system it will destroy every electric product in your house and or office.

A bad hosting company is the same way and can destroy your online presences.

The purpose of the hosting company is to store your web pages and display them when someone types your web address into the browser. If your website is down then the person looking for your site sees nothing and if they can’t see it then neither can the search engines.

If the search engines are unable to access your website after a couple tries then they will drop the site from their index. But it gets a little more complicated than that. If the site is slow to load then it could get penalized and not rank as well as it otherwise could and site visitors could leave before the site finishes loading.
Google also uses the location of the server to decide where you want to do business. If the server is in the UK then you could very well rank well in the UK search results but not at all in the US search results.

Pick your web hosting company carefully and keep in mind that if your site is down chances are the hosting company’s site will also be down. This means you want be sending them an email about the problem, you’ll need a phone number. So if they don’t have 24 hour support you could be waiting out the weekend with no site online and no one to contact about the problem. And if they don’t have a number you’ll be waiting for them to figure out there is a problem and want be able to contact or do anything about it.
