What Is A Web Designer?

I’ve spent the weekend listening to another web designer try and explain to be that content is part of the web designer’s job. I can understand the thinking and reasoning behind the idea and will even go so far as to say it would be a good service to add to our already growing list of services.

However, if I decide to get into content writing I will hire a content writer. I’ve got programmers for programming and designers for designing it would only make sense to hire a copywriter for copywriting.

At this moment in time I can think God that I am able to keep my designers busy enough that they don’t need to learn how to do copywriting. My designers are full time designers, not part time designer, part time programmer and part time copywriter.

I personally believe you get better with practice and if you do everything part time it’ll take you twice as long to get as good as you would if you were doing it full time. Or actually you would never get as good because you would only be working half as much or in this case a third at best.

I can understand his point, if my website was not able to keep me busy I would also have to find more tasks for my current designers to do, like copywriting. It’s one of the reasons I spend so much time on website conversion, being able to convert as many website visitors into clients can make the difference in having a fulltime designer or a part time copywriter.

I’ll get one of the girls in the office to start looking for a copywriter and I’ll hire them but I want pull a web designer off a web design job and ask him to start writing copy. I hired him to be a web designer and I want force my copywriter to design websites, I hired him to be a copywriter.

Web Designing Is More than Artwork

If I had to name the one thing I’ve learned the most about in the last year I’d have to say art. Art is all around us and when it comes to designing websites you have to have an artistic edge.

But an artistic edge is just one part of web designing. To be a truly great web designer you have to know how to get people to react to your website. Your website has to be designed in such a way that it will guide your website visitor and direct them down the paths you want them to go.

The artistic edge allows us to get the colors just right as well as the look and feel of the site but it ends there. The rest comes from learning and practicing our trade.
If you take a look at some of the artwork by Tom Lane you can tell that he is a true artist, however his website leaves us confused and dazed.

Creative Website Designers

It’s always nice to work with a web designer that is creative. It makes it a lot easier on the website owner when he can turn the job over to someone and know they are going to come up with some really cool ideas.

I’ve worked with a lot of creative people here at my web design office and know how much of a joy it can be.

Creative people are all around us and you can see their creativity just by walking into a store, without ever having to speak a word.

And sometimes we see their creativity in the least likely places.

For example, when walking into a public bathroom have you ever wondered how long it has been since someone sat on the toilet seat you’re about to use.

A very creative designer came up with a Thermochromic Toliet Seat that retains the heat memory of the last person that used the seat.

And if that doesn’t appeal to you then maybe a tabbed toilet seat will. Here we have a toilet seat where everyone in the family gets their own personal seat.

If nothing else you have to admit that there are some truly creative people in the world.

And since I ‘m using toilet seats as a way to show just how creative people can be, I thought I’d leave you with some more examples at the bottom of this page.

Just remember one thing, if people can be this creative when it comes to toilet seats how much more creative can we be when it comes to your web design needs.

You web design, like the toilet seats, need to show your website visitors why they need and cannot live without your product, without ever having to speak a word.
