I just read an article by guy who claims they did a survey and found that 98% of all successful businesses have had to pivot from their original business plan. This means, the majority of businesses that are successful are successful because they measured their results and pivoted their business according to those results.

If you’re planning on starting an online business and are so sure that your business is going to work that you don’t need to test and fine tune your website, you may find that is more difficult than you think. The majority of businesses never become successful and out of the businesses that do, the majority of those did do my testing, pivoting, and testing again.

Just these stats alone should be enough to show you how important it is to test, fine tune, tweak, and pivot not only with your website design but with your business.

The other day had a potential client call me, as we spoke I realized who was.

He was an ex-employee of one of my clients and he had not left on the best of terms. I had to make a decision.

1. Let him know that I knew who he was and that we were not interested in doing the job.
   
2. Pretend like I didn’t know who he was and if the client found out then I could say I didn’t realize who the guy was.
   

But I didn’t want to risk losing the friendship.

Within seconds the decision had been made and I was telling him we weren’t interested in any doing business with him. The fear of losing something you already have is greater than the chance of getting something you don’t have.

Let me see if I can explain that better.

The fear of losing what I’ve already got is greater than the desire for the rewards.

Okay…how about this?

Your website needs to work hard at removing any doubt of losing when someone purchases your product. The way things are worded can also makes a difference. If you have a 90% chance of winning then you are more likely to respond then if you have a 10% chance of losing. Losing scares you more than winning excite you. The way things are worded will affect how you respond as well as photos, colors, layout and content.

Your website design matters and needs to reassure the website visitor every step of the way.

The story about Joe and John and what I think the best designers of 2011 will look like, was made up. But the results and difference between one site being successful and one not being were based on sound research.

Like for example in 2007 there was a test done online with a tent company. Basically they wanted to see what the biggest influence was on someone when choosing one tent over another one. Other words, why would you choose tent B over tent A was it because of the waterproofing, look, feel, color what was it that made you pick one tent over another one?

What they found was that the first tent was chosen 200 times while others combined were only chosen 60 times. The number one biggest influence on what people purchased was not the color of the tent, the amount of waterproofing, texture or anything else, but surprisingly was the location of the tent on that page.

Other words, if you did a search for a four man tent you were twice as likely to purchase the first tent on the page regardless of the other features. I talked to a guy the other day about redesigning his site. His problem was that he had some stock he needed to get rid of and it just wasn’t selling. I got a list of his bestselling items and started looking through the site to find them. Everyone was the first item on the page.

I explained all we had to do was move the items he wanted to get rid of, to the top of the page, and he would get the results he was looking for.

“As webmasters, we have more control over the actions of the website visitor then you could imagine!”

To get people to react to a website you have to go deeper than just the conscious mind.

Something to Think About?

Joe and his brother John decided they were going to go into the camera business. Both had worked hard and they knew that it was hard work that gets you ahead.

Joe set out to start his business by shopping around and getting the best price on the website. Once Joe had found the company he wanted to go with, he got them started on the project. However there was a problem! The web designer had gotten so low on the price that he could no longer afford to do just that job and had to work on several jobs at the same time. This of course delayed the process and Joe became upset with the designer, because he believed the designer was just lazy.

It took months to get everything like Joe wanted but once the site went live Joe was able to take the little money he had not spent surviving the last couple months and put it into advertising. However two months later Joe was hardly making enough money to survive but none the less he was surviving. He had discovered that if he worked just a little extra here and there he could make the extra money he needed to live the way he wanted. However eight years later poor Joe was still working 15 hour days and hardly getting by.

A year later Joe took is camera business from a $30,000.00 a year business to a multi-million dollar business, would you like to know how?

Joe had been working 15 hour days and barley making ends meet for over 8 years. So when Joe heard his brother John was coming to spend the week with him, he was a little upset because he knew he had to work to make ends meet and didn’t have time to entertain, but he really missed his brother and was excited about seeing him. John arrived with the wife and kids in his brand new motor home. The first couple days were great with the cousins playing, the wives catching up on the last 8 years and the brothers doing the same. But Joe had to know John’s secret. So slowly Joe begins to ask about suppliers and prices. He knew that the secret to John’s success would be the difference in suppliers.

As John looked at Joe’s site he explained that Joe had taken the same route he had originally wanted to take. But his web designer explained that neither he nor John knew what the website visitors truly wanted. And the best way to discover that was to put some tools in place that would allow them to test and see how the web visitors reacted to those test. In order to get visitors to the site they would run targeted PPC and Facebook campaigns and use that information to tweak and fine tune both the website and the campaign. Once they knew they had a good keyword they would keep the PPC campaign but rank the keyword in all three of the major search engines as well.

John went on to explain the difference in the two sites. For example at this moment if someone buys a camera from Joe and forgets to buy the camera case, when he returns to the website to purchase the camera case he will in most cases buy the cheapest case. Let’s pretend you are buying a camera online. It’s a nice $3,000.00 camera. As you are making the purchase the website shows the camera you are buying with a list of things that other people bought when they bought this exact camera.

One of those items is a camera case and your subconscious mind says hey, we just spent $3,000.00 on a camera let’s get the nice $100.00 case to protect our $3,000.00 investment.

What’s $100.00 compared to $3,000.00?

So they buy the $100.00 camera case.

John explained, “To take advantage of this we redesigned our shopping cart so it would automatically pull the items that people who bought who had also purchased that camera. By running these test we found that the single thing that affected what case someone would buy was the location of the item on the page. 70% of the time the consumer would pick the first item in the list. We moved our most expense and best camera case to the top of the list. When people compared the $3,000.00 camera to the $100.00 camera case it appeared to be nothing.

However if these people had forgotten to purchase the camera case and returned later they would compare prices only and almost always buy the cheaper case. This one feature not only increased camera case sales but allowed John to become the #1 dealer for that camera case and currently got the best discounts, offers and information from the manufacture.

Your Website Design is one of the most important elements in an effective online marketing campaign.
