This year after many meeting and lots of talks we have decided to once again start offering search engine optimization.

Just A Thought

I got a call today from a guy who wanted to build some sites, each site needed to be created and set up for AdSense.

This got me to thinking.

Pay-per-click is the fastest growing form of advertising online right now. You just about can’t do a search on the major search engines with-out running across at lest one site with AdSense on it.

Now with Yahoo and MSN trying to get ahead of Google, this is only going to get bigger.

The only thing that could through a wrench in this game is all the rumors of click fraud.

It seems that most these problems are caused by the publishers.

So why not just get rid of the publishers?

At this point I don’t think Google could get rid of the publishers and come out of it. A lot of publishers use Google AdWords to get traffic to their AdSense sites. If you get rid of the AdSense sites you also have to remove a part of the AdWords revenue.

A part, I’m sure Google does not want to get rid of.

What if click fraud caused the advertisers to stop advertising and the PPC ended.

The consequences would be felt throughout the Internet.

The search engines now provide revenue for many thousand’s of sites. Which then spend their money on hosting, website designs, houses, new cars and the list goes on and on.

If that revenue was to stop it would not only affect the money being spent online but would also affect the money being spent off line.

A lot of people talk about wanting to see Google fall, but I wonder how many people would get smashed in that fall.

Just some passing thoughts I had today and I could be way of with my way of thinking. I’d love to hear any other thoughts on this.

Google AdSense Account Reinstated

I’ve had a couple people ask me about this so I’ll post what I know on the subject.

I’d also like to say that Google can ban you while you’re waiting on a $20,000.00 check and then they keep the money.

So I’d never recommend doing this as a full time job.

Also keep in mind that I was not using Google AdSense to make my money, I was using something similar to it but was trying to keep up with everyone at the time.

I’ll start with how to get a site banned and move from there on to how to get a site unbaned.

1. You can get your site banned if you click on your own ads. One click will do it.

2. You can get banned for asking other people to click on your ads.

3. You can get banned if a site visitor clicks too many times on your ads.

4. If your traffic has unusual spikes durian the day, they will ban you.

5. If your traffic clicks too many times on the same age, they will ban you.

6. If your traffic has spikes at certain times durian the day, they will ban you.

7. The same people returning everyday and clicking on the ads can get you banned.

8. Having low or no clicks can get you banned.

All the letters seem to say the same thing, that you were banned for invalid clicks. But there are a lot of reasons you can get your account.

Now how to get an account reinstated.

Start by going here https://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/request.py

After that start sending very, very nice emails and continue to do so every day for about 2 months. Never threaten legal action, just continue to kiss up everyday for about 2 months and they will eventually let you back in.

“Websites That Get Visitors To Take Action”

“Websites That Get Visitors To Take Action”

The second a visitor gets to your website there is an invisible clock that starts counting the seconds you have to convince that visitor to stick around long enough to make a purchase.

Does your website have what it takes to convert a visitor into a customer?

In order for a website to convert a visitor into a customer it has to have a look and feel that lets the visitor know he’s in the right place.

I’m not going to go into the design in this article but would like to focus more on setting up pages for your products.

Let’s keep in mind that we only have 3 seconds to convince our visitor that his or her life would be more complete - better, easier, more productive, more profitable and happier - if that reader owned what it is we are selling.

This needs to be done for each product on our site, so throwing everything into a shopping cart and calling it done isn’t going to cut it.

Nor will sending all our visitors to our home page, each product needs its own page and that page is where we need to convert that visitor from a fast surfer to a spending customer.

These pages need to focus on one product and not the whole site. While a search feature is a good idea links to other pages of the site are not. We don’t want to confuse the visitor with other products or information.

Our text needs stop them in their tracks, people buy on impulse and our text needs to create that desire in them that causes them to want to purchase our product. We’ve got one shot with this, so we need to focus on how the owner of this product will benefit.

Our product pictures need to be larger than normal, we want our pictures to catch their eye and increase the interest they have already shown in the product.

Showing really good pictures a long with the text will also help in getting the visitor to want to purchase the product.

The text needs to be large and easy to read.

We want everything above the fold.

Now the page needs to build trust.

This is done by adding all our contact information, not just our email address, but a physical address and phone number.

Increasing Conversion

I was sitting here today thinking about the 3 second rule. That’s how long I’ve got to convince a potential client to stay on my site.

I was thinking about all the different ways to do this and decided that the best way is creating a separate page for every product being sold on a site.

By doing this I’m able to give the searcher exactly what he’s searching for.

Let’s say I’m selling car parts.

>Now I’m going to take one page of my site and create the page for one of my parts, let’s say a custom hood for a 1990 Ford Mustang.

I’m going to name the page 1990 Ford Mustang Custom Hood and use the text in my title and as the first line of text. Maybe make it plural in the text like “Custom 1990 Ford Mustang Hoods” and place it in an h1 tag.

It should be fairly easy to rank for “Custom 1990 Ford Mustang Hoods” and when the visitor clicks on my site he/she will know they are on the right page because the 1st line of text will match what they searched on.

Matching the search exactly, I don’t see any reason to place any links to any of my other products on this page. All I want to do is sell him a 1990 Ford Mustang Hood.

I’ll use an h2 tag under my h1 tag to explain to him how happy he’s going to be and what this new hood can do for him.

Then I’ll add a couple pictures of the hood. A little larger then normal and nice clean looking picture.

Ill also make my font clean and easy to read and maybe a little larger then normal.

The pictures are from the shopping cart so the call to action is right there with the shopping cart.

I don’t want to confuse him with anything else; all I want to do is guide him into making the purchase for this one product.

The home page would link out to all my products and if you got to the home page everything would be normal.

But every product on the site would have its own page that would be set up for selling that one product.

The conversion should be a lot higher then normal because the traffic is 100% targeted for that page.

Design’s That Make a Difference

It seems that I can’t get through a day without having to spend a couple hours trying to talk a client out of doing something crazy.

I’m only the designer and should give the client what he/she wants, but I have a hard time not adding in my two cents and sometimes even refusing to do a design because I disagree with the direction the site is taking.

For some reason people really have a hard time understanding that a visitor to their site could careless what the site looks like.

They have come to your website to find information, buy a product or be entertained not for a flash intro page, a cute little guy typing away at his computer or the little stat counter that shows how little visitors your site has really had.

They don’t care about the colors of your site, the pictures in the header, your logo, colors, fonts or anything else you might think is important.

They are there for a purpose and have a goal in mind and could care less about all the other stuff.

So does the design even matter?

You can bet it does, but not in the way a lot of people seem to think.

While the visitor to your site could care less about the color of your site the colors do effect him/her. In most cases the site visitor is not even aware of the effect the colors have on them.

Some colors have more influence than others but all colors do influence our emotions.

For example blue is a calming, peaceful, and trusting color while red is anger, impulsive and an action color.

I’m not going to write about all the effects each color has on a person but knowing what colors to add into a site can effect the response a person takes while on your site.

Another aspect of the design is in font and size of the font.

Large easy to read fonts are an important part of your site. The easer it is to read what you have to say the better the chances are that a visitor will take the time to read it.

Adding scrolling text and moving pictures will only distract the eye of the reader and make the text more difficult to read as will using crazy font colors or constantly changing the colors of the font.

Something else I see a lot of people wanting to do is add pictures into the header that has nothing to do with the site.

You have 3 seconds to let your visitor know what your site is about. If you add pictures of pretty flowing rivers while trying to sell pigs online this will only cause confusion and cause the visitor to leave in hopes of finding his/her perfect pig some where else.

So if your selling pigs, then put pictures of pigs in the header.

The header is the first thing people see when entering your site, by using appropriate pictures in the header it helps give an understanding of what your site is about.

It’s also a good idea to put a nicely designed logo in your header that tells something about your business. I know most people could careless rather or not you have a logo but a logo does help to build trust and credibility.

Something else I find funny is the all about me text everyone wants to place on their home page.

No one cares about you or your business; they only want to know what’s in it for them.

So the first line of text should tell the site visitor why they should even consider spending more then 3 seconds on your site.

What can you do for me?

I could go on with my rant all day but the more I type the better I feel.

But before I end my rant I would like to say one last thing.

The navigation on your site is an important part of your site, trying to come up with something original is just crazy. As a site visitor I don’t want to spend an hour trying to figure out how to go to the next page on your site.

Just make the navigation the same as everyone else’s and be happy your site visitor decided to stay long enough to look through your site.

Ok, I’m through with my rant now and I can go back to work.
