Looking through my stats I came across where someone did a search for “why is it so difficult to find a good web developer” and my website popped up.

I handle the marketing for Geeks on Steroids and spend most my time trying to find and hire good web developers. I believe one of the biggest problems is that the schools are really behind the times in what they are teaching and when people graduate they are not up-to-date with the newest technologies.

Designing and marketing websites online is a never ending game and most people are not willing to put forth the time and energy needed to make it all come together and work. I was talking with some SEO guys not longer ago when I learned that most SEO companies make their living doing cold calling.

This is a company that makes their living selling a service to clients that they themselves don’t understand enough about to make it work for themselves. Web designers are very much the same.

A good web designer understands that a website has to convert traffic and get traffic. If he’s making his living with yellow page ads and cold calling people then he has no reason to study and learn what it takes to make a website convert.

If his own website is not designed to convert the traffic then how can you expect him to know how to build you a website that is able to convert traffic and make money?
